Dakota Ultrasonics Precision Thickness Transducers

F.A.Q.

When should I use a Delay Line Transducer versus a Direct-Contact Single-Element Transducer?

  • Delay Line & Pencil Transducers (10 MHz, 15 MHz, 20 MHz): Essential when measuring thin materials (0.005" to 1.000" / 0.127 to 25.4 mm) or when using Echo-Echo (E-E) and Interface-Echo (I-E) modes. The replaceable acrylic or graphite delay cylinder acts as an acoustic buffer so the crystal finishes vibrating before the sound wave hits the top surface of your part, eliminating the near-surface dead zone.

  • Direct-Contact Transducers (1.0 MHz to 10.0 MHz): Used in Pulse-Echo (P-E) mode when measuring thicker components (0.040" to 36.0" / 1.0 to 914 mm) where maximum acoustic energy needs to couple directly into the part without losing energy across a delay-line interface.

What is the difference between High-Wear (SLM/PSLM), Fingertip (T-40xx/T-50xx), and Membrane (SLF/PSLF) contact probes?

  • High-Wear Contact (SLM / PSLM Series): Features a rugged aluminum oxide wear plate designed for continuous scanning on smooth or machined flat metal surfaces (1/2", 3/4", and 1" diameters with BNC or LEMO connectors).

  • Fingertip Contact (T-40xx Side-Exit / T-50xx Top-Exit): Compact, low-profile stainless steel housings (1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" diameters with Microdot connectors) designed for tight clearances and one-finger placement.

  • Protective Membrane (SLF / PSLF / T-8071): Uses a flexible, field-replaceable elastomeric membrane that conforms to rough, pitted, as-cast, forged, or slightly curved surfaces, dramatically improving acoustic coupling on uneven parts.

How do High-Gain (HG), Medium (M), and Resolution (R / HD) damping options differ?

  • High-Gain (HG): Lightly damped crystal that produces a stronger, higher-amplitude ultrasonic pulse—best for thick, coarse-grained, or sound-absorbing materials (castings, plastics, composites).

  • Medium Damped (M): Balanced general-purpose bandwidth combining good axial resolution with solid penetration.

  • Resolution (R) / Highly Damped (HD): Heavily damped crystal that produces a very short, crisp ultrasonic pulse—maximizing near-surface resolution and echo separation on thinner walls.

Which delay line tip do I need for the Dakota T-402-5507 transducer?

The Dakota Ultrasonics T-402-5507 (1/4", 15 MHz) ships with both 3/8" and 1/2" length acrylic delay line tips for measuring metals, glass, and ceramics. If you are measuring thin plastics below 0.060" (1.5 mm) down to 0.005" (0.127 mm), order the optional X-633-0000 (1/4" × 3/8") Graphite Delay Line Tip, which provides the acoustic impedance mismatch required for Plastics Mode (PLAS).
